CITY RELIEF WORKS
THE CONSTRUCTIVE SCHEME EARLY DECISION LIKELY A decision will probably be reached by the City Council this evening as to ■whether it will proceed with the propose'd scheme of constructive relief works, comprising stormwater drainage improvements in the central city area and a new reservoir on Mount Hobson. This scheme was devised for the purpose of employing men on works of iitility at something better than relief rates. The estimates provide for the expenditure of £44,346 on the stormwater drainage and £27,000 on the reservoir, a total of £71,346, of which the Unemployment Board will find £11,562. It had been hoped that the board would have made a further contribution of £1350, representing the total of the wages tax which will be paid, but the board would not agree to this.
The council now has to decide whether it will make provision for this £1350 so that the scheme can proceed. The plans are ready for the stormwater drainage work and the approval of the Auckland Harbour Board has been obtained. Little has to be done to complete the plans for the building of the reservoir.
