FIRE IN COAL MINE
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE COLLIERY AT DARGAVILLE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DARGAVILLE, "Wednesday Considerable damage was done by a fire which occurred in the Avoca Coal Company's mine, and practically the whole of the mine plant has been destroyed. The mine, which has been worked by a party of Hikurangi miners on a cooperative basis, has supplied during the past two years most of the coal for local requirements.
An investigation of the shaft has disclosed that the seam, the pumping machinery, all the tram lines and sundry gear lies under a quantity of earth, which collapsed owing to the timbering being burned. A sunken hole, some 40ft. in diameter, marks the scene of many months' hard work.
The company has another outcrop of coal from -which present contracts are being fulfilled. Prospecting has be«n in progress for some time and bores have been put down -with a view to further development of the company's property. It was not until the mouth of the shaft had been blocked to smother the blaze that complete control of the fire was effected.
