PENSIONS AND WORK

CIVIL SERVICE CASES MR. CARRINGTON'S PROTEST A protest against superannuated Government employees accepting private employment has been made in the Legislative Council by the Hon. C. J. Carrington. He moved that a return of such persons in receipt of more than £249 yearly in superannuation and at the same time obtaining wages from private positions should be laid upon the table of the Council this session. Mr. Carrington said it was never intended that superannuated civil servants should compete on the labour market with men who had no means and who were out of employment and who had contributed toward tho subsidy of the pensions of tljp. men securing the positions. Some superannuated civil servants received only small pensions and required to work to augment their incomes, but those with a pension of over £250 a were not in that position. Mr. Carrington added that since lie had given notice of his motion he had learned that the information he sought could not be given, owing to the cost and difficulty of compiling such a return. He asked leave to withdraw the motion and at the .same time to express the hope (hat the point raised might receive the consideration of the Minister of Pensions. Owing to the fact that there was no seconder, the motion lapsed.
