KATHERINE MANSFIELD
MEMORIAL IN WELLINGTON FATHER'S TRIBUTE TO FAME A resthouse is to be erected at the southern- approach to the avenue of trees in Fitzherbcrt Terrace, Thorndon, Wellington, as a memorial to the late Katherine Mansfield.-It, has been designed by Mr. W. Gray Young to the order of her father, Sir Harold Beauchamp, as • commemoration of the fame won in the world of letters by his daughter. -- The design for the resthouse is one' in keeping with the surroundings, there being two "houses" of red brick with shingled roofs. The two will be connected by a trellised pergola, and plenty of seats facing several directions will afford rest and shelter, no matter which way the wind blows. Fitzherbert Terrace connects the northern end of Molesworth Street with Hobson Street. Katherine Mansfield, daughter of Sir Harold Beauchamp, was born in Wellington in 1890. Her life was one of great circumstance, a brief career, into which: experience, both dulling and splendid, was fairly packed. As she reached maturity she was drawn into a circle of modern t writers in London, whose names, like her own, are now prominent in 20th century literature, although not all of them are of the same artistic stature as she. Her health failed, however, and she died at Fontainebleau on January 9, 1923. Most of Katherine Mansfield's girlhood was spent in New Zealand, and at the age of 21 she published "In a German Pension." Soon afterward she married Mr. John Middleton Murry, the critic, who is still a prominent figure in the English literary world. A year before hii wife's death—the culmination of a lons illness—her book, "The Garden Tarty," was published. Three months after her death "The Doves" appeared, and later in the same year a volume of poems. "Something Childish" was not issued until the following year, 1924. Her jour? nals and letters have followed since.
