THE ANGLING SEASON
BOTORTJA AND TAUPO
FAIR CATCHES REPORTED
FISH IN GOOD CONDITION
[IIY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Monday
The following details of fishing in the district wero reported to-duy by Mr. A. Keano, conservator of fish and gamo for tho district:—
In tho Rotorua area, Lake Okataina has been fishing well, and the use of the fly in tho lake is now facilitated by tho lowness of tho lake level. Hitherto back-cast-ing was practically impossible owing to the precipitous nature of the country surrounding the lake. Some good fish up to 81b. in weight were taken from this lake. •
Lake Tarawera produced very good bags and several limits for trolling efforts. Tho fish from Lake Rotorua are in good condition, and the average is at least half a pound heavier than last year. Lake Rotoehu was fished by a number of anglers who wero rewarded with good bags containing fish up to 6£ll>. Some splendid fish were taken from Lake Rotoiti during the period, the best bags being secured on tho fly at the channel. Tho condition of the fish for the opening of the season has been uniformly good, and better than thoso caught during the same period in other seasons. 'Die numbers of fish taken are above last year's tallies.
Whakatane and Opotikl Tho season opened in good weather in the Whakatanc-Opotiki area, with all rivers high. Most of tho fish in this area are feeding on tho bottom, with only the small fish rising. In the Tarawera River trout were generally poor. All Mie small trout, to 21b. were in good condition. Tho Rangitaiki was in flood, but is now clear, for the rivers in this district the fish average 21b. in weight, and range from to 7£lb. in weight. Fish above 41b. in weight were frequently taken. The weather in tho Waikareinoana area has been unsettled, and anglers have not had the best of opportunities to fish from this locality. The fish taken averaged just over 21b.
The Waikato River provided some excellent sport during the period. The fish taken were reported to be in good condition, averaging 231b. in weight. Archdeacon Simpkins and Archbishop Averill caught 19 trout spinning and with the fly in one day. Several Limit Bags
Several limit bags of fish in good condition were taken during the period in tho Taupo area. Anglers using the dry fly were very successful. Fly-fishing at the Four-Mile Bay has •produced good sport," fish up to 81b. being taken. Tho heaviest fish reported weighed lOjlb., and was taken on the spoon at Whakaipo Bay. The average weight of the fish taken from the lake was slightly less than 51b., but the various bags reported contained a number of good fish weighing over 71b. The opening of the present season in the Tokaanu area found less anglers in the district than previously, but all those who appeared have reported that the fish are in better condition and have more fighting quality. The Tongariro River was considerably higher than for the past two years, and several anglers did not have much difficulty in obtaining 15 fish, although some were put back in the water. The condition of the fish caught in the Lake appears in several instances to be as good as some of the' March and April-condi-tioned fish. All anglers were very satisfied and trolling parties were jubilant over their catches.
