ANNIVERSARY REGATTA

QUESTION OF CONTROL

SUGGESTED CHANGE REJECTED

A motion moved by Mr. J. H. Frater, that the Auckland Yacht and MotorBoat Association should be invited to take over the running of the 1933 Anniversary Regatta, was ruled out of order by the chairman, Mr. A. Brauud, at the annual meeting of the Anniversary Regatta committee last evening. There was a very large attendance and more than usual interest was taken in the proceedings.

Mr. B. W. Beaumont moved that all present form themselves into a committee for the purpose of carrying out the 1933 regatta, and this was carried. Speaking in support of his motion, Mr. Frater said the time had arrived when the regatta should be conducted on different lines. It was almost impossible to ask the citizens of Auckland to subscribe to the regatta in these difficult times. Unlike olden times tho regatta of to-day was really a yachtsmen's carnival and boatowners should be asked to support it. He thought that if the association were invited to conduct tho regatta delegates from the various clubs could be appointed to form a committee to carry out ■ the function. The regatta committee had funds and perhaps the trustees could be asked to assist in the matter of finance. The chairman said he would not like to see tho affairs of the regatta handed over to the association.

Mr. Beaumont said the regatta committee had looked after its affairs very well in the past and he saw no reason why any change should be made. Captain W. Ross said he had been a member of tho committee for 60 years and it would be the death knell of the regatta if adeparture from the present system of conducting its affairs were made. Mr E. H. Davis, in opposing the motion, said the regatta had been founded by the forefathers of those present and it was only right that it should be carried out in tho usual manner.

Messrs. W. J. Hicks and B. Spencer supported the proposal, the .first-named remarking that the expenses of conducting the regatta were far too heavy. Messrs. E. H. Davis and J. Longbottom were nominated for the position of chairman and on a vote being taken Mr. Davis was elected. Mr. Longhottom was appointed vice-chairman, Mr. B. W. Beaumont, auditor; Mr. J. B. Johnflton, honorary solicitor; Mr. J. C. Hewson, secretary; and Mr. ,T. McGehan, treasurer. Fifty-five members were elected as a general committee.

Mr. A. J. Collings gave notice of motion that the question of electing an executive be considered at the next meeting.
