SHORTAGE OF BOYS
UNFILLED CITY JOBS THE NEED FOR REGISTRATION There is no shortage of boys in Auckland seeking employment, but yesterday when the Auckland Boys' Employment Committee sought to fill four vacancies boys considered suitable for the jobs could not bo found. This was clue to the fact that while the committee is continually being askwl to supply boys very few of the available boys are taking the trouble to have themselves registered. An official of the committee stated yesterday that a mechanical firm required a decent type of lad with a good pi'imaiy school education and possibly a year or two of secondary training. The job was suitable for a boy of 14 or 15 years with a mechanical sense, but not one boy possessing these qualifications was on the register. The other boys were required for warehouses and factories, but no sort of choice could be offered to the employers. It was stated that most of the boys calling at the committee's bureau ranged in age from years to 20 years, and were considered too old by those applying for boys.
"Jf parents would let us have the particulars of their boys and have their names placed on our register, particularly of the boys of from 16 to 18 years, we could find jobs for them," said this official. -"If they are registered they have a much better chance of being placed. This week we have placed 39 boys, most of them in the city, and that number would have been increased had the right sort of boys been available to us."
