Nov. 1S The cricket match England versus an Australian eleven was begun to-dav at Melbourne in fine, cool weather. The wicket was in good condition. There were 23.000 spectators and the receipts totalled £I2OO. The teams were:— England. Wvatt (captain), Allen, Brown, Pataudi, Sutcliffe, Levland, Bowes, Paynter, Duckworth, Larwood and Voce, with Mitchell as 12th man. Australia.—Woodfull (captain), Bradman, Oldfield, Oxenham, Lee, Ironmonger, Darling, Rigg, Nagel, Nash and Barnctt, with O'Brien as 12th man. Wyatfc won the toss and England batted. The game opened brightly, Wyatt scoring fours off Nash's first two deliveries. Play then became dull, one hour only yielding 39 runs. Nagel was in particularly good form. He bowled nine overs for seven runs. As in the Victorian match Wyatt was dismissed leg before in the last over before luncheon. He had batted 87 minutes for his 29. The side's total at the luncheon interval was only 56, and the crowd was sarcastic. First Century Takes 145 Minutes Sutcliffe gave a poor display. He made several lucky snicks and also gave a chance when he had made 29 to Oxenham at leg off Ironmonger. In two hours 20 minutes Sutcliffe only scored 36. The crowd then cheered every stroke ironically. The first century look 145 minutes to compile. Two runs had been added when Pataudi was clean bowled by Nash. He had batted an hour for 23 and hit two boundaries. Runs come at a funereal pace. Sutcliffe was labouring dreadfully as in the Adelaide game. The score was 150 after 195 minutes' play, and a section of the crowd commenced to count out Sutcliffe. At 182 Levland mis-hit one to mid-off and was caught by Darling off Ironmonger. Ho had batted 77 minutes for 38 and hit four boundaries. Sutclifie Goes and More Wickets Fall The score had not been altered when Sutcliffe skied a ball from Ironmonger to Bradman at cover point and was easily caught, lie had batted 214 minutes for 87 and hit five fours. Wickets then fell quickly. The batsmen attempted to force matters, but Oxenham was bowling well. Brown brightened matters up by clean hitting. lla batted 19 minutes for 27, including six fours. Oxenham turned the ball well. He bowled 20 overs, six of which were maidens, for 47 runs and five wickets. When stumps were drawn England had lost eight wickets for 238.
