THE DAY AT ELLERSLIE

FROCKING ON THE LAWNS NEW SHADES AND MODES FLOWER BEDS AND TREES For tho opening day of tho races, tho weather on Saturday was by no means in a genial mood—very much the reverseAll day a strong wind blew, into tho stands and as the afternoon advanced a keen bito made itself severely felt. Coming from the direction it did there was little shelter to be obtained and tho only thing to I do was to resort to wraps, which no wise woman goes without at this time of the year. Ihere was no lack of colour in tho dressing, the two favourites being cherry red and all tho bright shades of blue—tho brighter the better. It is a cheerful colour and stands out well from its surroundings, but is rather apt to make tho wearer colourless unless silo takes precautions to meet the need. Cherry was seen in hats, in tailored suits and ensembles, also in tho jaunty littlo coats that were worn with cream or white tailored skirts and sometimes with navy blue. White boater hats with a band to correspond in colour seemed just the correct wear for these. Apparently the tailored suit has onoo more come into its own, as there were many to be seen, frequently in smoke or stone grey and also in black, worn sometimes with a grey hat to match or a hat in blue or green. Tho black frock and the black tailored suit relieved with white was most attractive and in all cases suited the wearers admirably, whether they were young girls or older women. In one or two instances a primrose shade was chosen to relieve the black and this too was very satisfactory in effect. Spotted materials and plaids were again to be seen and here and there were striped effects, but these were not the stripes that we were familiar with a year or two ago, the present ones combining two or three different shades or colours, showing the Romany influence. Shoes are nowadays a most important feature of a woman's costume and these w-ere to be seen in all kinds of styles and colourings frequently two or three shades combined in the one pair of shoes. Other important accessories which either contrasted or else toned in with the costume were the scarf and the handbag and of the latter there were some charming examples—notably one in a black patent leather, made in envelope fashion with a Chinese monogram in the corner for its sole ornamentation, done in bright colourings. Another was also in black with a most uncommon design in the corner carried out in white, green, yellow and red. On the whole, however, the frocking was not what it would have been had the weather been kinder and the sun in a more genial mood. It would have been a person very hard to please, however, who failed to see the charm and beauty of the gardens. At this time of the year they achieve a beauty that is never to be found in any other season. There is the beauty of the lawns, emerald green after the winter rains, and the delicacy and inexpressible charm of the trees in their new-found glory of leafage. Sturdy oaks, graceful willows, spreading planes—there is nothing like them for beauty of line and colour. The flower beds, too, are a blaze of harmony and the flowering shrubs, particularly the rhododendrons, are a foamy mass of pink and white. Beds of cinerarias, violas, pansies and calceolarias make a wonderful medley of colouring in their setting of green lawn and just now the roses are a joy to look at in their sheltered corners near the glasshouses. No one should miss Ellerslie at this time of the year. Among those who were present were Mrs. H. 0.
