BOBBY CALF TRADE INCREASE IN KILLINGS AUCKLAND PROVINCE ACTIVITY The bobby calf season has commenced in earnest in tho Auckland Province, and a total of about 20,000 calves is being handled weekly at the three works, Ilorotiu, Southdown and Westfield. The killings last year numbered approximately 250,000, and it is anticipated that an equal number of calves will be dealt with during the current season. A representative of one of the freezing companies stated yesterday that at the flush of the season, toward the middle of this month, the number of calves killed in a week would possibly exceed 25,000. At present all the works in the province were active, and on the busiest days as many as 10,000 calves were slaughtered. Tuesday in each week was the principal day for killing, as much of the buying was done on Monday. This season farmers were receiving lower prices for their «alves, the return averaging Is 9d a head, which was approaching Is a head less than last year's price. The decline in the value of the skins and by-products was largely responsible for the decrease in the amount paid to the farmers. The opinion that the season would not reach the peak period until the end of this month was expressed by another Auckland business man prominent in the freezing industry. He said it was the experience of his firm that calves were later this year than last.
