WELLINGTON WOOLLEN CO. AN INCREASE IN PROFIT DIVIDEND MAINTAINED A net profit of £18,356 is disclosed in the annual accounts of the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd., for the year ended June 30. The profit is an increase-of £340 on the previous year's earnings. With £3084 brought forward from tho previous year, there is £21,440 available, out of which the directors recommend payment of a final dividend of 3: por cent, making 6 per cent for the year on both ordinary and preference shares, leaving. £3440 to bo carried .forward. The profit was struck after providing £SOOO for depreciation of plant and buildings. Tho report states that during tho year a much larger sum than usual was spent in maintenance. Owing to existing financial and political conditions, trading 4 was extremely difficult, so necessitating a greater provision for actual and contingent losses. Income tax of £9584 also added considerably to overhead expense, which in other respects was greatly reduced by economies. While additional fiscal duties and higher exchange wero apparently favourable to local industry, the steadily diminishing buying power of consumers, duo to economic stress, nullified these to a large extent. Following is a comparison of the company's results and appropriations for tho last three years:— 1930 1931 1932 Brought- forward . . £1,020 £3,0G8 £3.084 Not profit .. 28,018 18.01G 18,350 •529.0G8 £21,084 £21.440 To reserve ~ 2,000 Dividend, p.c. .. 8 G G Amount . • .. 24,000 18,000 18,000 Carried forward .. £3.008 £3,084 £3,440 Tho capital of the company remains unchanged at £300,000. MORTGAGE INTEREST A.M.P. SOCIETY'S KATES OPERATION FOR TWO YEARS The Auckland district offico of the Australian Mutual Provident Society advises in regard to the reduction of interest rates for loans on mortgage that the board's decision operates for two years from September 1, contingent, of course, as outlined by the board, upon no further legislative 'inforfcrenco with existing mortgages to tho society. . In regard to the roference made by tho board to the effects of a special imposition of a super-tax of 2s in the pound on all interest received under mortgages, the district manager said yesterday that the referenco was apparently to a tax existing in Australia, as there was no such imposition in Now Zealand.
