UNLIGHTED BICYCLES
Sir, —It is to be hoped that the many side issues brought into the discussion on unlighted bicycles will not cloud the position and result in no action being taken in this matter Instead of waiting to have legislation passed on the subject, what is preventing the authorities from taking action against those who flagrantly break the law, <ls it now stands 1 I am pleased to note that, since writing last, some new reflectors and painted mudguards are in evidence, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. The Otahuhu authorities must not shut their eyes to the fact that the Great South Road is one of the worst areas in this respect. One evening last week I passed four cycles without reflectors on a return trip between the tram terminus and Otahuhu township. Racing cyclists are among the worst offenders and, while one is glad to see this form of sport encouraged, club officials should remember that members using this and other roads for evening training invariably have no painted mudguards and seldom carry reflectors, and I appeal to them to take up this matter with and on behalf of their members. Schoolmasters could also help in this matter, as I am sure the number of young offenders, particularly about dusk, would astound them. Cyclists and others interested in this subject should read a very able account of the true position, which appeared in last Thursday's motor notes. K.W.
