SCHOOLHOUSE DESTROYED
- FIRE AT TE KOWHAI TEACHER'S HURRIED ESCAPE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday An outbreak of fire destroyed the schoolhouse at Te Kowhai, a five-roomed dwelling, together with its contents, shortly after three o'clock this morning. The headmaster of the school, which is about seven miles from Ngaruawahia, Mr. A. J. Cross, who was the only occupant, awoke to find his room filled with smoke and barely had time to make a hurried exit after teizing a few personal effects. Although dazed, he made an unsuccessful attempt to re-enter the house. Owing to the rapid spread of the flames, however, nothing could be done to save the building or furniture. . Mr. Cross' furniture was insured for £175 in the Sun office, but his losses, which included a number of valued war trophies and medals, art> stated to be fairly heavy.
