AWARDS FOR BRAVERY
CHILD RESCUED FROM POND RUGBY PLAYER'S ACTION [BY TELEGBAPH —PRESS -ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Three awards for bravery were made at a meeting of the court of directors of the Royal Humane Society to-day. Sir. William Harold Nairn, of Hawke'i Bay, was awarded a certificate for rescuing two girls from drowning at Poranjjahau Beach. Letters of recommendation are to be sfent to Air. Oscar Ramstead, waterside worker, Wellington, who, on April 20, rescued a man from drowning after ha had fallen overboard from the steamer Komata, and "to Mr. Arthur fiinchco, butcher, One.hunga, who rescued from drowning a child who had fallen into * deep pond. Mr. Hincho dived repeatedly until he located the child stuck mud at the bottom of the pond. The rescue for which Mr. Hinchco has now received recognition by the Royal Humane Society took place on September 12 last in Gribble-Hirst Park, Sandringham. Jack Bernasconi, aged six years, fell into a deep pond in the park. Hearing cries of distress Mr. Hinchco, who was a member of the Manukau third grade mediate Rugby team, promptly left the field on which he was about to play and immediately dived into the water. After great difficulty Mr. Hinchco was able to locate the boy and bring him to the surface. The boy appeared lifeless, but a member of the St. John Ambulance started resuscitation, and after a quarter of an hour the boy revived. Subsequently Mr. Hinchco was presented by the Auckland Rugby Union with a framed certificate aud a gold medal in recognition of his action.
