SKILL OF DRIVER

fire engine in city „ NARROW PASSAGE IN TRAFFIC The skill of the driver of a city fire engine proceeding down Queen Street to attend an outbreak in a light motor-truck at the corner of Fort and Customs Streets yesterday afternoon, narrowly averted an accident. The sudden drawing up of a horse-drawn lorry "pocketed" two motorcars alongside the safety zone above Wyndham Street. It was impossible for the fire-engine to stop, so the driver swerved the machine, which just managed to negotiate the narrow opening offering. One of the cars was grazed, but no damage was done. The brigade -was quickly on the scene of the outbreak, but the fire had been suppressed before its arrival. It was caused by the ignition of petrol in the carburettor following a back-fire of the engine.
