MISSILE IN CHURCH

thought to be bullet CONGREGATION STARTLED TWO WINDOWS PIERCED [by telegram—own correspondent] ■WELLINGTON, Monday A startling incident occurred during the evening service at the Kuripuni Methodist Church, in the Wairarapa district, yesterday, when some missile, which it is thought was a bullet, crashed through a window on one side of the church, passed above the heads, of the congregation and pierced a window on the opposite side of the church. The service was nearing a close and tho collection was being taken when alarm was caused among the congregation as the glass of the windows was penetrated. It was not long before it was seen that the neat holes in the windows could not possibly have been made by a stone thrown by larrikins. The appearance of the holes and the speed with which the incident happened were in accord with the firing of a shot. Although no report was heard, it. is thought that the sound of the breaking glass would have prevented a shot from being heard. It is considered that any missile other than a bullet could not have penetrated one window, passed over the heads of .the congregation, and, almost at the same height, pierced a window on the other side of the building. Although a thorough search was made of the surroundings, no trace of the perpetrator was found.
