SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT
TO-MORROW'S BY-ELECTION OBSERVING COALITION PACT APPEAL MADE BY MINISTER [by TELEG RATO —rRESS association] WELLINGTON, Monaay Inference to the Southern Maori byelection, to be held on Wednesday, was made to-day by the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, who is the senior Reform Minister in the Coalition Cabinet in the absence of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. W. Downie Stewart. In making an appeal for support of the official Coalition candidate, Mr. Young said: "In discussing the Southern Maori by-election just before he left New Zealand for Ottawa, Mr. Coates, as Leader of the Reform Party, expressed regret at the sad death of Mr. T. Makitanara, and he said to me that it was his sincere wish that the pact entered into prior to the general election between the United Party under the leadership of the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and himself should be faithfully kept by all friends of the Reform Party. He hoped Mr. Ned l'arata, who had been chosen by Mr. Forbes as the official Coalition candidate, and who had Mr. Coates' approval, would be elected. " Mr. Coates authorised mo to take such steps as I might think fit to convey to his friends among the South Island Maori electors his request that they stand firmly by the Coalition Government and send to Parliament the gentleman who had been selected by Mr. Forbes and approved by him as the official candidate, Mr. Parata. I now appeal to South Island Maori friends to stand by our chief in honouring the wishes of the Leaders of the Coalition."
