DRINKING AT DANCES
DISCUSSION AT TE AROHA [FnOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE ATIOHA, Monday The secretary of the Diocesan Council of the Mothers' Union forwarded to the To Aroha Borough Council a resolution which had been passed at a meeting in Hamilton drawing the attention of the council to the excessivo use of intoxicating liquors in cars at dances in public halls and asking that the council use its influence in remedying this growing evil. It was decided to write expressing sympathy with the resolution. Sir. Kennedy eaid he thought the Mothers' Union was needlessly alarmed. The evil did not exist to the extent believed. He said ho had uever seen any young people the worse for liquor at dances. Mr. McMahon said he was in entire agreement with the Mothers' Union, but if that body was in earnest it might show the council how the evil was to be dealt with. Drinking at dances did, unfortunately, take place, a»d the practice was a blot on New Zealand's name.
