NEW SOUTHERN CROSS
DEPARTURE FROM LONDON MELANESIAN . MISSION VESSEL The Melanesian Mission's new vessel Southern Cross is reported to have left London for Auckland on Saturday. She is the sixth missionary vessel owned by the Melanesian Mission to bo named Southern Cross. Tha vessel is to replace the steamer Southern Cross, which arrived at Auckland from the mission stations in the South-west Pacific on J one 25, and has since been withdrawn after 29 years' service Tho new vessel was built at East Cowcs, Isle of Wight, and was launched on June 22, the ceremony being performed by Lady Bridgman, after a short service conducted by the Bishop of Portsmouth. Last week the vessel was dedicated by the Primate, Dr. Cosmo Lang, at Greenwich Pier. Nine bishops and 100 clergy attended the dedication service.. The Southern Cross VI. is much smaller than the steamer 6he is succeeding and will be stationed at the islands without making periodical visits from Auckland.
