OWNER'S SUDDEN RETURN I ' ' INTRUDER MAKES HIS ESCAPE * ONLY FEW SHILLINGS TAKEN' As he -was making a search of the shop'fs an intruder was surprised in the premises of McCabe's Radios, afc the corner of Queen Street and Karangahape Road, on Saturday afternoon by the sudden return of tho proprietor, Mr. Roy McCabe. The man was able to make his escape by rushing upstairs through the millinery and drapery shop of the Misses McCabe. When a mechanic, the last person on tho premises, left McCabe's Radios at 2 p.m. on Saturday, 8,11 the doors were securely locked. Shortly after 3.30 p.m. Mr. McCabe returned unexpectedly, let. ting himself in through the front door, which is in Queen Street. ,As he was moving about the front portion of the shop he heard a man ascending the stairs ieadiug from a workshop at the back to the millinery establishment, which is on the floor fronting Karangahape Road. He ran through to tho workshop and up the stairs, but found that the man had reached tho top of the flight and had secured * dividing door,__which locks on the upper side. Mr. McCabe at once ran out through ]his shop aud up Queen Street to enter • tho upper storey. As be went heard a door being slammed on the Karangahape Road frontage, but could see no sign, of the intruder. The man, who was not seen by Mr. McCabe at any time, had been able to rush through the millinery shop, let himself out by a front door and make his escape. Returning to his own premises Mr. McCabe found that tho man had apparently entered through a window on tha upper floor, had descended tho stairs and then forced a door leading from the work-' shop to the front of the shop, where ha must have been when Mr. McCabo ap. proached. No radio equipment was missing, but the thief secured 8s in cash from a drawer.
