AUCKLAND BEATS HAMILTON KING'S DOWN TO MOUNT ALBERT Exciting, open Rugby football was produced nt Eden Park on Saturday afternoon when two secondary schools' games were the chief fixtures. The first match was between Auckland Grammar School and Hamilton High School, tho local team showing a return to form and winning by 19 points to 3. The second was a contest in tho secondary schools' senior grade competition between Mount Albert Grammar School and King's College. Mount Albert was superior in all departments, particularly in forward work, and kept its lino intact against a determined King's attack toward tho end of the game to win by 9 points to 0. On its own ground Sacred Heart suffered another narrow defeat at tho hands of Takapuna Grammar School by o points to 3 after a bright game. Ling failert to convert. Hamilton retaliated and when Grammar wits penalised Pountney goalcd with a fine kick. Except for spasmodic buists by Grammar, Hamilton did most ot th- attacking, and on one occasion ft. Tukcre was grounded when he was almost over. A few minutes prior to this incident, the Hamilton captain and second five-eighths Paterson, hud to rotire through injury. Eventually Grammar cleared und Graham spoiled u good run with a pass forward to Roberts The score at half-time was: Grammar, 3; Hamilton, 3 At tho beginning of tho second spell a Grammar rearguard attack troubled ilnmilton. but the visiting team worked right up field again, and after some tight pliiy McCownn checked Platts just in time. Grammar effected a sudden reverse when Thompson accepted from Graham, made a run. and then passed to Head who in turn sent tho ball out to Spittall. The winger outpaced the opposition from beyond half-way to score between the posts. Dean converted. Soon afterwards Grammar added a third try. a back movement ending in Spittnll going over wido out. Ling's kick missed. Grammar had slightly the better of the subsequent exchanges, and a penalty kick enabled Ling to increase the lead to It points. Head gained ground for Grammar by means of a strong run. Ling was handy to snap up the ball and he sent Roberts over for another try between the posts. Dean converted, making the final score: Grammar, 19; Hamilton, 3. Mr. C. W. Henderson was referee. MOUNT ALBERT'S SUCCESS POTTED GOAL AND TRY
He Mount Albert forwards commenced with great daeh and by repeatedly lei tins their backs luivo the ball forced Kind's to defend hard. Mount Albert's persistence had effect Johnson potted a coal from a wide angle. King's looked dangerous, but a strong kick to half-way by Williams brought relief to Mount Albert. Tho ball wds taken into tho King's twenty-five and twice Williams almost scored as tho result of clever passing rushes. A forceful attack by King's 6aw a good chance lost owing to faulty handling among the forwards. Sustaining the pressure. King's compelled Mount Albert to remain on the defensive until the latter team managed to clear just before half-time, when the score was: Mount Albert, 4: King's 0. At tne opening of tho second spell Kind's made some bright passing rushes, but tho failure of one of these enabled Mount Albert to score its only try. A pass from Lundon to McCarthy went astray and Clarke, the Mount Albert winger, darted into the opening and dribbled the ball down the field, capping his effort with a try between the posts. Johnson converted. After King's had stemmed another strong attack a kick by Moses led to Mount Albert being placed in difficulties but Curruthers saved. A misunderstanding between Mosos and Meredith allowed Mount Albert to break through in h loose rush and Williams crowed under the posts, but the. referee ordered a scrum for a knock-on. King's withstood a series of Mount Albert attacks ar.d then made its opponents defend desperately in their own twenty-five for several minutes. However. Mount Albert regained control just before the end and left the field deservingly victorious. the final score being: Mount Albert. D; King's 0. Mr. M. Kronfeld was referee. MARGIN OF TWO POINTS TAKAPUNA BEATS SACRED HEART Afler the game had been in progress for about 10 minutes the hall passed right, alone the Tnkapuna back line and Warren scored. Emery converted. Stung by the reverse. Sacred Heart fought hard for points and the defence was severely tested. Rennio initiated a passing rush from which K«we scored after Sexton and Reid had handled. O'Regnn could not convert. At half-time tho scoro was: Takapuna, 5; Sacred Heart, 3. For some minutes after the resumption of play Sacred Heart maintained a vigorous attack", but Takapuna found relief in penalties and in forcing. Once Reid sent Nelson and Sexton away and the last-namod was grounded very close to the line. At last Takapuna managed to clear, but soon the interception of a pass by Sexton enabled Sacred Heart to return to the attack. In spite of persistent efforts by Sacred Heart there was no further score the gome ending: Takapuna, 5; Sacred Heart, 3. Mr. C. P. Stratford was referee.
