PARATA CUP COMPETITION TE PUKE DEFEATS TAURANGA The following accounts of Rugby football matches played in various country centres on Saturday wero forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: — To Puke To Puko dofeated Tauranga tn the Pnratn Cup competition at To Puko by 2!l points to 11. The weather was perfect. For tho winners, scores were got by Potene, MoKenzie (2; Webber nnd Moses, Hadley converted two. The other points were got from a dropped goal by Farmer. For Tauranga tries wero scored by Cameron and Gray. Pol ley kicked a penalty goal, and converted a try McKenzie. Farmer. Mcses and Potone. in tho backs, and Ilndlcy, Webber, Brandford an<l Wicklifle, forwards, wore tho best To Puko players. For Tauranga lies and Gray, in the backs, and Cameron, Hoke and Mnnscll worked hard. Mr. Moffat, of Whiikatane. was referco. Rotorua The main Rugby match at Arawa Park was tho inter-schools' game between Rotorua High School first fifteen and the Auckland Grammar second' fifteen. The homo team waa superior all round, tiio forwards playing exceptionally well, Tho Rotorua tackling was deadly, and Grammar had few opportunities. Rotorua'e score was made up ol two penalty gouts and three tries, ono converted, while Grammar scored two tries and converted one. Results: Seniors: Roloiti, 11, Whaka, G. Juniors: Rotorua High School, 17, Auckland Grammar School, 8; Whaka, 9, Waikite, 6; Old Boys won by default from Rotoiti. Whangarei.—Conditions at Rugby Park wero ideal for good, fast football and tho largo number of spectators was not disappointed. Great interest centred in tho senior match between Hikurangi and Maungakaramea, in view of the fact that on the previous Saturday Maungakaramea defeated Hikurangi in no uncertain manner. Tlieso are tho two leading teams for tho senior championship and the game to-day resulted in a win for Hikurangi by 14 points to 3. For Hikurangi penalty goals wero kicked by Hamilton (2) and tries wero scored by Beehro and Linnell, on« being converted by Hamilton. Childs scored a try for Maungakaramea. Tho result places Hikurangi in the leading position for tho championship by two points. Tho game was fast and open, both of forwards being evenly matched. The Hikurangi backs outplayed their opponents. Other sonior games were:—Old Boys, 11 (tries by Collins, and Campbell, McArdle converting one and kicking a penalty goal). City. 9 (tries by Fraser and Gladding and a penalty goal by Watermnn); Kailiou United defaulted to Uorahora. Juniors: Horahora. 25, Public Services, 0; Old Boys, 9, Maungakaramea, 0_; Onerahi, 15, Waiolira, G; Mangakahia defaulted to High School. Third grade: High School. IG, Horahora. 8. Talhape.—Tho Inglewood Club defeated a Tnihnpo B team by 11 points to 8 at Taihape, after a very even game. Tho visitors fielded an excellent pack of forwards. Play was somewhat dull in tho first spell, but it brightened considerably in the second half. For Inglewood tries were scored by Eaves (2) and Hunt. Tho last-named converted his own try. Gibbs and Cha«e scored for Taihape Chose converted Gibes' try. Cambridge.—ln tho second round of the sectional games for tho Findlny Cup. the Moninsville senior representatives defeated Cambridge by 23 points to 0. Trier, wero scored by Aitken, G. Leeson, Anderson (2) and Harnett. W. Cameron converted four tries. Tho winners wero a definitely superior team, the local forwards being no match for the heavier visiting vanguard, which gave a dashing exhibition nnd was far superior in all departments. Although tho half-time score was 10 to 0. tho game was well contested to this stage, but early in the second half the Cambridge defence crumbled and a young team was badly beaten in tho concluding stages. In a cur-tain-raiser. the Cambridge third grade representatives defeated Matamata by 7 points to G.
Matamata. —Matamata played its first Finlay Cup fixture at homo against Putaruru and scored an easy win by 36 points to 5. Having also defeated Rotorua, Matamata is now tho winner of the southern section of this competition. Matamata early assumed tho offensive, and, although its passing was erratic, its backing up and speed proved ton good for tho weak tackling of the visitors. At half-time the score was 27—0 in Matamata's favour. In the second half the. home team slackened off and Mati scored for Putaruru. Patterson added the goal points. Matamata responded with two further tries. Allwood, Dm-stan and Eraser were the best of a weak Putaruru team. Carroll, Carlson. Sharpe, Porterfield, Butt. Story and Fnsor wore outstanding for Matamata. Carlson scored a try. kicked two penalty gcnls. and converted three tries for Matamata. Wilson, Ensor (2). Stewart (2). Carroll and Porterfield abo scored triss. Putaruru gained its points through a fry by Mati. converted by Patterson. Juniors: Paletere. 9. Hinucra, 6: Matamata, G, Walton. 3: Kaokaoroa, G. Old Boys, G. Waipa.—The Waipa junior representative team to play Waikeria nt Te Awamutu on Wednesday, as a curtain-raiser to the senior representative game, Waipa v. Te Awamutu.—The Ballistite Cup competition of the Waipa Rugby Union was commenced at Albert Pa k. when the Te Awamutu seniors dofeated Waikeria by 10 points (a potted goal hv L. Spiers and tries by J. Turney and L. Spiers) to 0: ltovers defeated Kihikihi seniors by 10 points (tries by Elliot, Ellicott (2). and Thomson. C. Pollard converting two), to 6 (tries by Wynyard and Christie). In the junior championship. To Awamutu defeated Aiohcna bv 14 points to 3. Nautunui defeated To Mawlini by 31 points to 0. arid Rovers defeated Pirongia by 15 points to 5. In the Silvester Cup competition High School defeated Rovers by 11 points to 9. • Te Aroha.—A large crowd of enthusiasts witnessed the match between Te Aroha and Hatiraki Plains in continuation of the Poland Cup competition. Weather conditions were ideal. Although beaten by 27 points to 0 the Hauraki Plains team put up a hard fight and throughout the first half play was oven. The fast breaking forwards and tho fine play by the inside backs fielded by Te Aroha wero responsible for the large score. In this respect Rackham and Tipsey were tho pick. Tries for Te Aroha wero scored by Tipsey (2). Rowe. Palmer. Jackson and Morrell Rackham converted three tries and kicked a penalty goal. McPhcrson kicked a penalty goal and Costollo scored an unconverted try for Hauraki Plains. Mr H. Ekliind was referee. Te Aroha boat Hauraki Plains in the Shaiebrokers' Cup competition by 17 points to 3. Tries for Te Aroha were scored by Parton (2), Horgan (2) and Ilnddon. Horgan also converted a try. Rcnsliaw scored Hauraki Plains' only points with an unconverted try. Mr. T. Atkins was referee. Hamilton. —The Hamilton B representatives had little difficulty in defeating Raglan by a margin of 10 points in a match in tho Wniknto Rugby Union'o Finlay Cup competition played at, Rugby Park. Although tile visitors were well served by their forwards, ilio rearguard could not copo with the combination of the faster Hamilton backs. RagInn scored first, Forseman gaining a good try early in the game. T. Armokete converted. It was not long before Hamilton was back in the visitors' territory, the strenuous efforts boing rewarded when Lisscttc kicked two penalty goals in quick succession. Broderick then scored for Hamilton, and twico repeated tho performance before halttime. none of tho tries being converted. The resumption of play saw Raglan attacking. K Armokete scoring a fine try. Hamilton had little opposition for the remainder of the game, Caskey crossing the line twice. A few minutes later Mcl Jell notched a further try Hamilton's last try was scored by Lisactte, the fullback, who dashed across at (he end o[ a passing movement. Tho final score was: Hamilton. 27: Raglan. 8. Ngaruawahla.—A match between tho Hamilton and Taupiri representatives in the finlay Cup competition conducted by tho Waikafo Rugby Union resulted in an easy victory for the former tonni by 32 points to 3. Paoroa.— In the annual competition for tho Fleming Shield at Paeroa last Saturday the Te Aroha District School team won the Irophy outright by beating Hauraki Plains by 35 points to 0. Tries for the winners wero scored by Gibbons (5), Johnson (3). Frenr, Botlomley and Gibbs. Johnson converted one try. GAMES IN SOUTH AUCKLAND [FROM OCR OWN correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Salurday Play in the South Auckland Rugby Union's competition started on Saturday. The Manukau and Franklin representative teams met at Tuakau in a match which provided an excellent exhibition of football. Franklin won by 11 points to 3. The score at half-time was B—o in favour of Franklin. £l. Stoupe, a Manukau five-eighths, potted a beautiful goal from about 25yds. out and a minute or two later scored a brilliant try betwoon the poßtß In doing so he was injured and was forced to retiro. Stephens converted the try. During the first spell the Franklin forwurds dominated the game, but in the second half tho Manukau backs made the pace and opened up the play. Two other memberß of tho team, Dow and Michell, retired injured and the side was unlucky to loso tho match. For Franklin, C. Leathern was outstanding at halfback, and scored two trios. Simelboy scored a try, which was converted by J Tonga. . The Pukekohe representatives defeated tiie Woiuku team at Waiulcu by 19 points to 8, their forwards proving superior. UMtiy. Crosbie and MoAlpine were outstanding in tho Pukekohe pack, while Wood was the best of the backs For Waiuku. Bregman and McFarlane played good forward games and Moylo and Jackson proved the best among tho ' backs. Pukekohe's tries were scored by Crosbie, "Wood, Ward and Broiralio White converted two and kicked a penalty goal. For Waiuku, Jackson scored and McGlnshan converted and kicked a penalty goal. In tho junior competition Pukekoho. 0, defeated Waiuku. 0. A Pukekohe player, Bovce, retired suffering from a broken col iarbone. Third grade: Pukekoho, G, defeated Manukau, 3.
