CANTERBURY DEFEATED

SUCCESS OF OTAGO TEAM TWENTY-FOUR POINTS TO NINE [BY TELEGRAM —rRESS association] DUNE.DIN, Saturday The Otago Rugby representatives defeated Canterbury to-dny by 24 points to 9 in a ganio which was characterised by bright, back play on both skies. A crowd of 10,000 pooplo saw the match, which was played in fino weather on a heavy ground. Although Otago won by such a margin and was undoubtedly the better side on the day thero was not, such a difference between the teams as the scores might seem to suggest. The first spell, as a matter of fact, was fairly evenly contested, and at that period it looked as if either sido might win. In the second spell, however, the gamo assumed a different aspect. The Otago forwards, although conceding weight to their opponents, mastered the situation, and toward the end of tho game they were definitely superior. Tho backs of both sides were always ready to throw the ball about and with a heavy ball and a damp ground tlie hnndling was good. Tho passing of tho Otago backs was far more offectivo than that of their opponents, who did a lot of handling while standing still and failed to run their outside men into position. Good defensivo work was also shown by both sides. By far tho larger number of penalties in the game were awarded against the visitors, several of whoso forwards were persist ently offside after the scrummages. ITortwell scored Otago's first try after a loose rush, Bathgate converting. Shortly afterwards a brilliant back effort by Canterbury resulted in Dunshea racing over unopposed. Mortlock missed tho shot. From a scrum Oliver cut in well and sent Rowo over. Brown missed the kick. Lemon opened oiut nicely and passed to Wilson and Smith, who scored a good try. Bathgate converted. Shortly afterwards from a line-out nea- the line Peaco forced his way over for the visitors. King failed at goal. McKenzie scored Otago's next try, but Hortwell's kick missed. The score at half-time was:—Otago, 13; Canterbury, 9. In the second spell Bathgate and ITortwell each kicked penalty goals. Hamilton scored the final try after selling tho dummy. Bathgate converted, and the game ended:—Otago, 24; Canterbury, 9. In a junior representative match Canterbury and Otago drew, 5 points each. It resulted in a win for the Maoris by 24 points to 3. The scoroa do not give a true indication of the run of the play, as tho Northerners narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. Both sets of forwards were evenly matched, if anything the Northerners being superior. In the hack division the Maoris held a decided advantage, showing more finish and combination than their opponents. It is difficult to individualise them, but Downs, wing-threequarter, and the two five-eighths, Himona and Potaka, Were particularly brilliant. The forwards were a hard-working lot and M. Rika was eeen at his best. The North Auckland forwards were a very even lot, the raost prominent being McDonald and Stuart. Mackay, at half, vvns the outstanding back on the ground.
