WHANGAREI HARBOUR.
TOWN WHARF SERVICES. ESTIMATE OF SAVINGS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Thursday. A report on the control of the town wharf services by the Whangarei Harbour Board was submitted to the board at its meeting to-day by the engineer and secretary, Mr. W. M, Eraser. The board took over the service from the shipping companies on December 1. The report estimated that from the figures of tho last four months, it, was expected that under the new arrangement tho board would gain £I3OO for the first 12 months, made up of saving in commission formerly paid to the ship-owner for collecting dues, receipts from handling charges and i :icreased tonnage brought about by a prcoer check on the measurements and carro generally. After meeting the rurmir t cost of the system an estimated clear profit of approximately £9OO would be shown for the year.
