OLD MAORI CARVING.
DISCOVERY NEAR TE AROHA. INTERESTING RELIC UNEARTHED. [FROM OUR OIVN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROHA, Thursday. An ancient Maori carving was unearthed to-day by Mr. W. Mohring, of Shaftesbury, when digging a drain in a swamp near his home. Mr. Mohririg discovered the carving only a foot below the surface. It is about 10ft. long and 18in. wide, and w;j.s o'v.idantly a pallisado post or a gate standard. I'rom its worn appearance it is thought to b(i of very ancient origin. The top is carved in the crude semblance of a head and tl.e head surmounts a fulllength figure, fully tatooed. The post has evidently been carried down by flood waters from a pa which once existed on the foothills bordering the farm, where its earthworks and defence lines are Siill to be seen. Numerous axes and implements have been found previously, but 1 here has been nothing in the way of carving.
