SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
ELECTIONS THIS EVENING. REPORTS 'OF YEAR'S WORK. Annual meetings of householders for the election of school committees will bf> held throughout the district at 7.30 this evening, when reports of last year's work will alscf bo read. Additional reports are as follows: Mount Eden.—The year had been a trying one the Government grant being inadequate to carry on the work of the school. Several functions were held, resulting in a sum of £6B being added. Accounts showed receipts £243 and espenditura £252. "Wages for the year amounted to £IISS, and the main work was improvements to the school grounds. The total attendances at the dental clinic numbered 1239. but the upkeep of this service was a. serious drain on tho school funds. The number on the roll was 603, with an average attendance of 557. Good attendance certifica'.es numbered 130. A. total of 12S pupils learned to swim, and the attendance at the baths was 12,155. The inspector reported that the general efficiency of the school was very good. Remuera.—A statement of accounts lot the year showed total receipts amounting to £265 and expenditure £216, leaving a credit balance of £49. The average roll number was 677 and average attendance 642. _ The number gaining certificates of proficiency was 78, and five obtained certificates _of competency. About 120 boy 3 and girls gained swimming certificates for various distances.
Me'a do v.-bank.—The roll number was 459. compared with 438 for last year. Mora than 100 good attendance certificates wera won. Extensive improvements to school grounds were made under No. 5 scheme, diaining and concrete edging having been included. Wages for this work amounted to £774. A credit balance of £49 wa3 shownThe ladies' committee handed to the school committee the sum of £23- Bible reading lessons in the schools had been carried on successfully. Birkenhead. —The year ended with 3SL pupils on the roll. To encourage thrift, money was received by the teachers each week, arid n sum of £ll2 was banked bj" 271 depositors. Library books were donated by the Returned Soldiers' Association. Advantage had been taken of the No. 5 schema to undertake extensive playground improvements. including the reconstruction of tli« football field and refencing the whole school ground. Avondale.—The average daily attendance for the year was 725. the roll number being 7G2. The receipts amounted to £262 and the expenditure £199, leaving a, credit balance of £63. At the proficiency examination 65 per cent, of passes were obtained, a considerable decrease on former years owing to its more stringent conditions. Improvements were being effected to the playing area under the No. 5 scheme.
