STEER-RIDING EVENTS.
ALLEGATION OF CRUELTY. EXHIBITIONS AT SHOWS. DENIAL BY ASSOCIATION. "The only cruelty in steer-riding is to the riders and certainly not to the beasts, laid Mr. J. P. Kalauglier, vice-president, nt a meeting of the council of tho Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday, when a letter was received from the Auckland branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggesting that steer-riding should not be included in the programme at any future show. Tho society said protests had been forwarded from other societies in New Zealand, with a view to the matter being taken up with the association, or, failing satisfaction, to endeavour to have legislation brought in to prevent such exhibitions, which were considered cruel to dumb animals. Mr. Kalauglier said he considered the society was mixing in a matter which it would be well advised to leave alone. None of the beasts had suffered in any way and there was no suggestion of cruelty in steer-riding. The secretary, Mr. W. F. O'Donnell, pointed out that one of the society s inspectors had assisted at the last show. It was agreed to write to the society explaining the position and stating that it had not yet been decided to hold steer-riding at next year's show.
