ELLERSLIE TRAINING.
SMART GALLOPS RECORDED. KARANGAPAI'S GOOD SIX. & _ " LLANORE ALSO GOES WELL.
BY AHCHER
Conditions were excellent for training operations at Ellerslie on Saturday, when the course s:>roper, with the flags out about 30ft., the No. I grass and the tan were nil used for fast work. Some good gallops were recorded, and horses who went pleasingly included Llariore, Karangapai, Speedfast and Sir Monti. Oil tho course proper Tarporley (L. Dulieu) and Kawainga (Jenkins) were associated over sis furlongs in 1.20 3-5. 1 her? was not much between them at the finish, although Tarporley whs going more freely than Kawainga, who is a lazy worker. Morehu (Parsons) and Light Step (Tremain) reeled off four furlongs in 52 4-5b They were not asked for their best and were running on nicely- at the end. Morehu is possessed of a nice turn of speed and is now-thriving well. On the No. 1 grass Karangapai (McTavisli) gavo Moonfleet (Clifford) a couple of lengths' start and defeated him easily over six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Moonfleet set a merry pace over the first three furlongs in 36 4-ss, but ho tired badly ill the straight, where Karangapai went on strongly, and would have run a. very good gallop if he had had something to go with him at the end, where ho was travelling really well. Manawhenua (light boy) ran iour furlongs easily in 555. Manawhenua is doing well again, but will require some galloping to tune him up to concert-pitch. Sir Mond (Cammick) held just a slight advantage over United (E. Manson) at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. They ran the first three furlongs in 3D 2-5s nnd the last half-mile in 51 4-ss. It was a nice piece of work, which demonstrated that both horses aro in fine trim to keep their Takapuna engagements. Brampton and Neil. Talyoou was not asked for his best to run four .furlongs in 52 l-ss, while Brampton and Neil did a useful working gallop over a round in 2.1 3-5. Brampton and Neil have not been lately, but are in good racing trim.
Whirlalong just shaded Tho Jack Jumper over four furlong in 50 4-sa. Whirlalong has shown some promise on the tracks, but bo far has failed to display any form in public. The Jack Jumper also is sprinting fairly well, but ho will have to bo very carefully placed to win a race. Excella Tea (Cammick), with tho Yalkyrinn—Galli Curei filly to assist over the last three, rail six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. Excella Tea does her work satisfactorily, but has not yet succeeded in winning. Hawthorn (Parsons) and Hoyal Gallant (Tremain) got a break on Pal (Ludlow) and easily beat him over five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. The first furlong was run in 13 l-ss, the next in 12s. and the last four in 51s. Hawthorn and Royal Gallant were practically on terms at tho finish, with Hawthorn going tho stronger. _ Pal'a saddle slipped during the gallop, which accounted for him getting so fur behind. Golden Spahi (Clifford) gave Te Money (medium weight) a sound beating over five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. Golden Spahi is a fullbrother to 'Lomint, Chamour and Catoma and, like his relatives, ho is maturing slowly. However, he gallops well and can be expected to win races once he becomes really solid.
Speodfast's Smart Five. Good Idea and Cat-i-mes were associated over six furlongs in 1.20. Good Idea did her work well and should be ready for a good effort next time sho is called upon to race. , , . Click Clack (Nesbit) was not asked for her best to run five furlongs in 1.7 3-5. Click Clack has not accomplished anything special just lately, but should strip in good racing condition at Takapuha. Speedfast (Parsons) sprinted five furlongs in 1.2 4-5. It was a smart effort for a novice, but he was ridden right out and had nothing-, in reserve at. the finish. Speedfast gallops well on tho tracks, but in his races has generally hindered his prospects by failing to find his feet quickly. Muscadine ran un easy five furlongs in 1.9 4-5, and Cynthia N. was also allowed to take matters easily while running six furlongs in 1.25 2-5. Ijlanore (K. Malison) went .with characteristic freedom while running six furlongs in 1.17 1-5. Llanorc is a good track galloper, and now that she is acquiring condition she is showing a lot* of dash when allowed to rim along. On the tan Grand Spirit, (Gall) and Stimulant (Murray) covered a ™und in 1.53, the last half-mile taking 54 2-ns. lhey were not bustled at any part of the journey, and worked well. Titanette (Connor) was better than I«estaurant (Gall) over four furlongs m 52 3-»s. while Wild Country ran the same distance in 535.
Catoma Works Soundly. '• Golden Wedding just strode along steadily over a round in '2.0 3-5. while Patutahi and ,Soring Ahbey also worked usefully over a circuit in 2.3 1-5. Patutahi trotted down verv scratchily before working, but hit out freely enough when he warmed up. Vandyke (Ij. Malison) completed a use ml task with three furlongs in 40 3-5s Vandyke is working with a lot of dash ami will strip very fit at lakapuna. Marcheite was allotted useful work over a joiind. This filly has fined down a good deal, but l>as a tendency to go sore occa--81 CMoma (Clifford) ran his first three furlongs in 39 3-ss, and completed seven, lurlongs in 3.33 2-5. The Alison Cup candidate was gorn£ well within himself at the finish, and there is no doubt that he is in great heart at present. Dominican, who was brought home o the Inst five furlongs by Master Clements, was far too good for Royal Action over a round in 1.56 2-5. Dominican is working satisfactorily, but Royal 'Action is not showing any promise and looks a veiy difficult pioposition. .. , . Taneriri. who was a trifle sore after hi raco at. To Rnpa last week, was restricted to trotting work on the tan. .I anenri was allowed to drop out of the Alison Cup on acceptance-day, nnd H. Kaxna Will probably not, bo anxious to race hinv for a. lew weeks unless the tracks become easier. PHAR LAP'S VOYAGE. AMERICAN ARRANGEMENTS. PERMIT TO TAKE OWN FEED. * MEXICO CITY. Nov. 20. Inquiries by an Australian press representative reveal that Phar Lap will apparently be given every opportunity to meet his opponents under the best conditions, and will bo housed in a spec-ill stable, which has sheltered some of the most famous hoi'Bes of the American turf.
The champion will be accorded every special privilege possible, in an effort to enable an easy acclimatisation. Mr. Harry I'ollok, events chairman, stated: "1 have arranged that, the owners nra.y bring all ot Phar Lap's own feed—oats, gram, hay, ehau and possibly water also. We have received no-word of the probable date of arrival, but, intend to have a representative to meet him at San Francisco to assist in the transfer to A gun, Caliente. We have already arranged so that there wilT be no difficulty in crossing the Mexican border, and to assure the best possible conditions on (lie trip. Much depends on the liorse, and the length of time trained here, but, given sufficient time. I see no reason why the climate should hold Phar Lap back." Mr. Pollock refused to hazard a guess concerning Ihe probable odds on the horse, or the weight, likely to be assigned to him in the Agua Caliente Handicap. "The scale for five-year-olds at that time of the year in Agua Caliente is Ust. 31b.," he said. "That is what Sun Beau carried last year, and I do not believe a foreign horse could be handicapped more." Jfe asserted that all horses would he under "a heavy guard f or protection, and stated that no fears had ye« been heard expressed by American trainers concerning Pilar Lap's invasion. Rather, they were interested in seeing what the outcome would be. All were taking precautions, however. Some of Phar Lap's probable opponents will be Vanderpool, Plucky Play. Night Patrol. Sunfire. Bargello. Revely Boy and the Canadian champion Marine.
HELP TO CHARITY. PROPOSAL IN C HRI ST CHURCH. The Christchurch Times says:—"Phar Lap is to be exhibited in Christchurch in aid of tho Mayor's Distress Fund, on his arrival from Australia. The horse, it is understood, will be quartered at Mr. 0. D. Greenwood's station, Teviotdale, Arnberley, while in New Zealand."
