QUINNAT SALMON.

A RECORD SPAWNING, Interviewed at- Dunedin, Mr. A. E. Hefford, chief inspector of fisheries, said thr.t the quinnat spawning in the Hakataramea River this season was deemed a record, and the stripping had provided not only enough eggs for the ordinary requirements of the department, but sufficient to give a surplus with which to servo the desires of the Waimate and Wailaki Societies in regard to stocking their streams. Mr. Hefford added that Mr. J. S. Muir, the newly-appointed fish cultunst, has been hard at wokK, between lite hatching operations, in putting the Hukutaramea establishment into thorough order.
