SCHOLARSHIP IN ART.
NEW ASSOCIATION'S AIM. REQUEST FOR ART UNION. To further promote art in New Zealand the newly-formed Association of Art Societies has applied to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. A. Hamilton, for permission to condnct an art union. In referring to the matter at the annual meeting of the Auckland Society Arts last evening, the president, • Dr. E. B. Gunson, sajd""the average big art, union held in New Zealand resulted in a profit of about £IS,(XX). If the new association could raise as much as £3.8,000 by this means ii would be possblie to endow a travelling art scholarship, which would enable a Dominion artist to study seas for a period of three years. Xfr' proposed scholarship would be awarded annually, ti>«L successful artist to receive £3OO each year he was abroad. Painter?, sculptors and architects would be eligible to compete. Whatever diverse opinions might bo held concerning art unions, Dr. Gunson said, the fact remained that they were a most successful means of raising; money and they were sanctioned by the 1 law of the country. He thought the Minister of Internal Affairs would give the association's application for a permit favourable consideration. The object was » worthy one and would be of benef.t to art. Dr. Gunson expressed the hope that M the future a greater number of >;ew Zealand artists who went abroad i:o study would return to their own country. Th# Dominion should give every encouragement to these artists in furthering their careers.
