JASPER'S HOSTEL.

Sir, —In reading the Herald on Tuesday I noticed that the Rev. Jasper Calder received a very cold welcome when he visited his shelter on Monday evening. I think it is a disgrace to the men to make such complaints and cause so much hostility against a man who is tiying to do his best for them. I notice that a number of men are complaining about the quality of the food and the cold bath, also a shortage of towels. Well, if Mr. Calder would give first-class food and provide a nice hot bath with lavender bath salts, also a nice sqft Turkish towel, I would go there myself and board. Unemployed Digger. Sir, —With regard to the disgraceful scenes in connection with the Mission doss-house, may I point out that, if the militant section is not put out, and speedily, this noble work . will not be upheld by the public. There is no man in Auckland more, universally beloved and respected than the Rev. Jasper Calder —his name guarantees the worth of a cause, and' he has- literally, as far as man can do, obeyed Christ's injunction, "Sell all thou hast and give it to "the poor, and come and follow Me." He is sacrificing all worldly comfort and ease, his health, and everything most of us value, for those who, but for his efforts, would have been without either food or shelter, and because of a few miserable Communists (who deserve neither) his work will bo impeded, nay, perhaps stopped altogether. People will cot support the doss-house, or any other scheme, in face of such base ingratitude. I, and others, who are willing contributors for Jasper Calder's sake, and knowing the utmost will be done with our money, call upon him to provide only for those in real want, ahd. who appreciate what is being done for them, and to refuse admittance or food to men who, if really hungry, would not so disgrace themselves and humanity. Contributor.
