HIGHWAYS AND DERATING.
Sir, —My attention has been called to the further letter from Mr. J. A. S. Mackay that appeared in your issue of June 3. It is not difficult to understand why this gentleman seeks to create and foster misunderstandings in regard to the question of the derating of farm lands, but I decline to follow him in either his personal abuse (he was guilty of this in his first letter), or in his political animus which lie betrays in his latest effusion. Tho plain fact is that my argument includes consideration of the charges for interest and sinking fund oil tho capital cost of roads, whereas your correspondent endeavours to misrepresent it by limiting it to part only of tho maintenance of certain highways. It is in no criticism of any political party that I repeat my statement that the Main Highways Act has not provided that measure of relief to the overburdened county ratepayer that is long overdue. For reasons good or bad, Mr. J. A. S. Mackay appears to bo of the contrary opinion. 11. M. Husiiwoiitit.
