CRICKET IN ENGLAND. COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON. May 6. The results in the opening matches in the county cricket championship, which was won last year by Lancashire, were as follows: Surrey v. Gloucestershire. —Surrey, first, innings, 258 (Ilobbs 65, Gregory 68, Parker seven wickets for 128 runs); second innings, six wickets for 60, delared (Parker four for 25). Gloucestershire, first innings, seven for 175, declared (Sinfield 71 not out); second innings, seven for 145. Gloucesteishiie won bv three wickets.
Essex v. Kent. —Essex, first innings, 224 (O'Connor 100, Freeman eight for 109); second innings, 126 (Freeman seven for 33). Kent, first innings, 397 (Hardinge 128, Ashdown 63). Kent won by an innings and 47 runs. Leicestershire v. Derbyshire.—Leicestershire, first innings, 216 (Mitchell four for 56) ; second innings, five for 207. Derbyshire, first innings, 224 (Geary four for 50). Derbyshire won on the first innings. . Glamorganshire v. Warwickshire.— Glamorganshire, first innings, 185; second innings, 205 (Paine four for 47). Warwickshire, first innings, 120 (Mercer four for 38); second innings, 109 (Mercer eight for 42). Glamorganshire won by 161 runs. In friendly matches the results were as follows: — Marylebone v. Yorkshire.—Marylebone, first innings, 112 (Macaulay four for 33, Veritv five for 42); second innings, none for 65. Yorkshire, first innings, eight for 227, declared (Hammond 58 not out). The match was drawn. Notts v. Sussex.—Notts, first innings, 267 (Larwood 102 not out, Wensley five for 97); second innings, seven for 353, declared (Tlardstaff 104 not out). Sussex, first innings, 308 (Cook 69) ; second innings, one for 71. The match was drawn. WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP. LEWIS LOSES ON A FOUL. MONTREAL. May 5. Strangler Lewis lost the world s wrestling championship because he bit his French opponent. Henri Deglane. A hnge crowd saw Lewis apply three crushing headlocks to the Frenchman, who then turned the tables when ho applied a fiving mare and secured a fall Lewis later secured a fall, but Deglane, on displaying a bleeding arm, winch showed teeth marks, was awarded tlio match and the title on a foul.
