SHARP THORN'S SUCCESS. A WINTER CUP PROSPECT." [FROM OUR OWN COIIRKSI'O.VDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Lust February Sir Charles Clifford decided to reduce his team to make way for the young stock coming in. and one of the victims of the process was the "three-yoar-old Sharp Thorn, by The Ace from Braniblctyc, dam of Tborndale, Prickles and Brainbletorn. He was sold for 200 guineas and in the. interim has represented his new owner on four occasions for two wins and a third placing. On Saturday ho was responsible for the defeat of bis ex-stable mate Winsome Hind. Like nil The Ace breed, Sharp Thorn is very leggy, but commands .in exceptionally long stride, which he brought into evidence in the lust 50 yards of Saturday's race. There is every reason to predict n great future for Sharp Thorn, and at present ho makes a strong appeal as a Winter Cup candidate, us, although this latest success was over six furlongs, lie will be all the better suited by longer journeys. Winsome Hind has always displayed a turn of tpeed, and was expected to win two or three races on her North Island trip at. Easter. However, she is not a robust filly and is a bad travel lor, so that it is probable she will in future bo raced in her own district. , , . • True Shaft had not. been doing welt prior to Saturday's meeting and there was a doubt about starting him in the Ambertey Handicap. However, with the withdrawal of Great Star and the consequent weak field left, it was considered that he would not need to be his heat to win, and so the result turned out. His party <lul lot tret much return from the machine, bb ho was sent out at odds on. It was easy money for him nevertheless. Rascal, who is now approaching his eighth year, showed in True Shaft's ruco that he still retains *his pace to a mnrke-1 degree. lie and Hanelusb. who ha.vo both had long spells, piloted the held into tlio straight, and, although the latter had had enough at the commencement of the run home, Rascal gave in only. 50 yards from the post and hung on to wain third money. This form augurs, well for his prospects later, as he revels in soft going. A permit for the proposed AshburtonWestland combined meeting for May 'J'> having been refused by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the former club will hold its autumn meeting at Ashlnirton on that date and the Westland Club has applied for Mav 30 to hold a meeting at Riccarton. Now that Great Star has shown his ability to master a middle distance, he lias prospects of winning somo big Handicaps next season He is not to Ijo raced during the winter, but will be kept in easy exercise for the early spring programmes. .
