THE HARBOUR BOARD.
CITY MEMBERS RE-ELECTED. CHANGE AT NORTH SHORE. MR. W. B. DARLOW SUCCESSFUL. For the second time in succession, all the four Auckland city representatives on the Auckland Harbour Board have been re-elected to office, the three otliei aspirants polling substantially lower totals. The popularity of Mr. G. R. Hutchinson was again shown by the fact that he was placed at the top of the poll, as he was two years ago. Three of the successful candidates were supported by the Citizens' Association. There were no official Labour nominees in the contest, Mr. I. Bloodworth, who was successful, standing on this occasion as an independent. In the contest for the North Shore Seat, Mr. A. E. Grcensladc, the sitting mpm ber, was defeated by Mr. W. B. Darlow by a majority of 725 votes. A remarkable feature was the strong support accorded Mr. Darlow in his opponent's own district. The new member secured a convincing majority also at Birkenhead. The voting at Takapuna was even, but Mr. Greenslade gained greater favour at Devonpcrt. The following are the results of the poll: AUCKLAND CITY. Successful. *G. R. Hutchinson (C) .. 14,255 *J. B. Auckland Hospital Board was shown by their return at the head of the poll. The fifth seat was annexed by Mr. F. N. Bartram, as successor to Mr. J. Dempsey, who did not stand again. There were eight candidates for the five city seats. As la. result of the poll Labour has increased its representation on the board from one to two, while another Labour nominee, Mr. M. M. Dreaver, was only 47 votes behind Mr. Bartram. The honour of securing the largest personal vote in the local elections in the city was again won by Mr. W. Wallace, for many years chairman of the board. He easily headed the list with a clear lead of 2000 votes over the runner-up, Dr. E. B. Gunson. The sitting member for One Tree Hill and the four road districts in Eden County, Mr. S. J. Harbutt, retained his seat, securing a majority of 196 over Miss B. E. Carnachan. ROUND THE BOOTHS. PERIODS OF CONGESTION. SOME STAFFS AUGMENTED. There was much greater activity around the polling booths in the city and sorno of the suburban areas yesterday than is usually the case at municipal elections. In former years the polling staffs have not had to with much more than a steady flow of voters on the morning of polling day, but yesterday, at most of the booths, there were frequent periods of congestion in the forenoon. This rush increased in the luncheon period, between noon and 2 p.m., particularly at tho main polling booth in tho Town Hall concert chamber, where extra polling places had to be set up, and at the Chamber of Commerce Hall in Swanson Street, where the luncheon hour voters were compelled to wait in qt cues to be supplied with voting papers. Tho city returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, had made arrangements adequate to deal with a large poll, and his organisation had to stand a severe test. Jri all there were over 600 men engaged to assist the city electors to record their votes on tho numerous issues submitted for their decision. Many people who had neglected to seo that their names were on the roll were debarred from exercising their votes and it was declared' in one polling place that as many as 25 per cent, of those who applied for voting papers had to be advised that they were not on tho roll. Many of these endeavoured to exercise their privilege by declaration, apparently under the impression that this method was. a substitute for enrolling. It was pointed out, however, that only in cases where application for enrolment had been made and the name did not appear on the roll was it legal tx> vote by declaration.
