TRANSPORT BOARD.
UNEXPECTED RESULT. SIX MEMBERS DEFEATED. RE-ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. THREE NEW. LABOUR MEMBERS. The first occasion on which the franchise has been exorcised to elect members to (he Auckland Transport Board produced a striking and unexpected result in the defeat of six members of the board out of a full complement of 10. The new members who have taken their places include two Labour Party nominees and u third member with Labour sympathies. Three nominees of the Citizens' Association were returned. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, was the only sitting representative of city interests to be re-elected. Mr. G. Baildon was among the defeated members. The poll was headed by a new member, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, Mr. Allum receiving (lie second highest number of votes. The poll resulted as- follows: —
VOTING AT TAKAPUNA. MR. J. GUINIVEN MAYOR. Interest at Takapuna centred in the contest for the Mayoralty between Mr. J. A. Algie and Mr. J. Guiniven, both members of the retiring council. _ Neither of the other two candidates received any substantial support. Tlie aggregate voting gave Mr. Guiniven a majority of 143. He secured a majority of 227 at Takapuna Central, 66 at Milford and 88 at Belmont; Mr. Algie headed the voting in the city booths by 116, at Baysvvater by 61 and at Hauraki Road by 11. There are 20 votes by declaration which have still to be considered at the official count to-day. Mr. F. W. Retter forfeits his deposit, having-failed to secure one-eighth, of the votes accorded to the successful candidate. Out of a roll strength of 5358 there were 2795 votes recorded. The result of the largest poll in the borough, that of 757 votes recorded at the Borough Council Chambers in the Mayoralty contest, was announced by the returning officer, Mr. H. L. Bowden, within 25 minutes from the time of closing the doors. Details of the poll are. as follows: The Mayoralty.
NEW LYNN CONTEST. MR. G. LAWSON RETURNED. The mayoral election at New Lynn resulted in" the return of Mr. G. Lawson, who defeated Mr. I. Hughes by 263 votes. Three former members of the council were re elected, the only former member who failed (o he returned being Mr. H. Dove. Details of.the poll are as follows:
THE OFFICIAL COUNT. CHECKING STARTS TO-DAY. The official count of the votes recorded in the city area on the Mayoralty, City Council, Hospital Board and Harbour Board issues will commence at 9 a.m. today. A large staff will be engaged under the direction of the city returning officer. Mr. P. F. Notley. The initial task will be the checking of the rolls and a scrutiny of the votes recorded by donlaration, after which the actual counting will be commenced. It is thought that it will be possible to announce the final figures in the mayoral contest by to-morrow, but results of the other issues will not be known before Saturday. The official count of the votes in the Transport Board election for the three constituencies will also be carried out by the special staff at the Town Hall.
