RAILWAY OFFICERS.

MEETING OF INSTITUTE. EVENTS OF PAST YEAR. There was a representative attendance of members at the annual meeting of' 1 the' Auckland branch of the Railway Officers' Institute, which was held on Saturday evening. The vice-chairman, Mr. T„ Martin, presided. The report and balance-sheet showed! the institute to be in a healthy condition and referred to the past year as an exceptional one. Owing to the Hawke'ii Bay earthquake, the institute cancelled the annual picnic and made a substantial donation to the Mayor's earthquake relief fund. . The committee advised members of details of tho part the institute took in opposing the salary cute. Every constitutional means was adopted in placing the point of view of the railway officers be-.. fore the Government, but without avail. The annual election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr. F. G. J/ Temmj vice-chairman, M. W. J. Andrews; secretary, Mr. J. E. Williams; treasurer, Mr. W. J. Humphreys; committee, Messrs. A. Chapman (maintenance), A. O'Shea (locomotive), K. A. Lowe (stores), A. Brown, E. J. Hambling, E. Hutchens, H. A. Huntly, H. W, McGregor, W. J. Power (traffic); delegate to executive council, Mr. J. E. Williams. In taking office Mr. Temm. reminded members that as the past year had been a strenuous one, the coming. year would certainly be a most interesting one "and, in view of the times through which they were passing, the committee looked forward to the whole-hearted support of the members in the endeavour to promote their interests. The whole question of transport appeared to be in a state of Jux, and new developments in connection with the railways in particular and in transport matters generally were expected ia the near future. „ ■
