THE FOLEY MEMORIAL.

EAGLET SCORES WELL.

LAST YEAR'S WIN REPEATED.

EACER ROSE IN SECOND PLACE

Perfectly ridden by I\. Voitre, Eaglet finished on strongly ; to win-the Foley Memorial Handicap for tho second year in succession. Wagering on the race was spirited, and Bright Glow wound up a slightly belter favourite than Eaglet with Gay Cockade a good third choice. Eaglet was first to show out from a good start, but Eager Rose and Pewa soon ran to the front, to carry -on the running along the back from Eaglet, Gay Cockade, Chopin, Bright Glow and Sii Aloud, with Volimond tailed off. Eager Rnso and Pewa were still together in the lead at tho half-mile, with Eajflet and Gay Cockade just in behind, and tho others bunching Eager Rose and Pewa wero still the loadera at the home turn followed by Gay Cockade, Eaglet, Bright Glow and Chopin. Pewa ran wide ar the turn and Gay Cockade then challenged Eager Koso. A little further on Eaglet made her claim, and alio came nway in the last 100 yards to beat Eager Rose by two and a-half lengths. Bright Glow was a neck away third, and Gay Cuckade was fourth. Next to cross the lino were Chopin, Volimond, and Pewa, with Sir Mond last.

Eaglet is right baok to her best form, and finished very resolutely when Voitro asked for a final effort. Eager Roso ran her usual honest raco. and Bright Glow was finishing on after having nono the best of the running. Gay Cockade had every chance and failed in the last half-furlong

TAURUA'S FIRST WIN

BRONZE TRAY RUNS SECOND

investors ware well on tho mark when they gave most support to Taurua and the British Princess-Bronze Tray bracket in the Rosebank Handicap, as Taurua nnd Bronze Tray returned tha dividends. Orient Morn wua loft at tho post and took no part in the race. Camp Princess and Alpina were smartest to begin and they made play along the back from British Princess, Vanessa, Bronzo Tray and Tnurua. Tho positions were much the same acrosa the top, but Captain Dollar went tip very fast near the three-furlonga post and joined Camp Princess in tho lead. At the turn, Alpina, British Princess. Bronze Tray and Vanessa,, who were closest to the others, all ran wide, leaving an opening for Taurua. Once into the straight Taurua assumed coiranand, but he had to bo hard ridden with the whip to win by a length from Bronze Tray. Caru» Princess was two lengths away third, and British llowick, Alpina and Valadore. Taurua, who was bought as a two-year-old for 1025 guineas, has been a long time in 'winning, but now that ho has broken the ice ho may go on to further success. Bronze Tray ran a really good race and will win soon. Camp Princess and British Princess both ran good races, and Captain Dollar displayed a torrent of speed. Captain Dollar is not yet ready, but should be very smart later 011.

DECISIVE HURDLES VICTORY.

GOOD JUMPING BY LUCESS

On the strength of his easy win at Ellerslie last Monday Luces 3 was backed down to odds-on in the Avondalo Hurdles, and he duly scored. Wako King and Singleton were quickly in the lead and they cleared away after jumping the second fence to be eight lengths olear of Lucess and High Pitch along the back. Four furlongs from home Lucess and High Pitch closed on the leaders and a little further on Wako King began to tire. Singleton and Lucess were just ahead of High Pitch entering the straight and there was little between them at tho second to last fence, where Singleton fell and interfered with High Pitch. Lucess then went 011 to win by five lengths frnn High Pitch. Wiltshire was seven lengths away third and Wako King was fourth, Arapawa being over a furlong away.

Lucess gained ground at every fence and gave a fine display of jumping. His task was made easy when Singleton fell, but he would havo won in any case. Singleton's effort was promising iu spite of '.he fact that he fell, and High Pitch showed improvement, although he still lacks confidence. Wiltshire displayed 110 particular dash and Respirator went only to the second fence, where he fell. Kaihoremai, who was sore after doing his preliminary, was withdrawn. GREYMOUTH SECOND DAY.
