Halfway to the shora one oar snapped in half and Mr. Rapatini immediately dropped the anchor. The seas gradually became worse and ho decided to drift with the wind in tha hope- of landing down the coast. By steering the boat with the remaining oar he managed to keep inshore and eventually landed at the Kahatarau River, iiva miles away. His plight was noticed previously by a fisherman, who set out) on a search. When all hope had been practically given up Mr. Rapatini returned home, having been picked up by a. service car.
