ESCAPE FROM FLAMES.

FAMILY IN BURNING HOUSE.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Saturday.

Aroused by the ringing of the telephore bell a Waverley family had a narrow escape from a burning house early yesterday morning. The residence belonged to Mr. F. Finer and it was destroyed. Nothing was saved. Members of the family had only time to scramble from the building in their night attire. The house, which- was practically new, was built on part of the State farm.

DRAPER'S STOCK SUITERS.

OUTBREAK QUICKLY SUPPRESSED

Portion of the stock in a draper's shop at the corner of Dominion Road and William Street, conducted by Mr. W. S. Miller, was destroyed by a fire which broke out at 2.35 yesterday morning. The building, which is owned by Mr. ,1. Nelson, of George Street, Mount Eden, was not damaged. Tlie outbreak apparently started in a shelf against the sidewall of the sljop. and was noticed by a night-watchman shortly after it commenced. He gavo the alarm from a street-box, and the Mount Eden brigade suppressed tho flames before they spread from the fittings. The only damage was to the shelves and to stocks of shirts and handkerchiefs. Mr. Miller's stock is insured in Lloyd's.

HAMILTON, Sunday.

Fire broke out in a grocery shop, owned by Mr. H. Finlay and occupied by Messrs. George Tindle and Sons, in Masstiy Street, Frankton Junction, at 3.30 a.m. to-day. The outbreak occurred in the back portion of the premises and extensive damage was done to the interior of the building and to the stock. The Hamilton Fire Brigade was summoned and soon suppressed the fire. Its operations were hampered by a demise fog. The shop was insured in tho London and Liverpool and Globe Office for £750, and the stock was covered by a policy :in the Atlas oftico for £7OO.
