LAKE TAUPO WATERS

REVIEW OF PAST WEEK

[BY TELEGKAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. "J

TAUPO, Saturday.

Although there are numerous anglers about, very little fishing has been done since the earthquake. The Waitahanm, Hatepe and Waipehi Rivers are very much discoloured and the launches have been particularly quiet this week. Tokaanu Bay is still ' fishing very well. A great number of fish have been taken in the past week by trolling parties. Poukawa, Omahu bays and the mouths of the Waiotaka and Waimarino are all fishing well. Anglers at the Waiotaka outlet report good fly fishing. At Tongariro on February 4 one angler took seven fine fish at the Bridge and Hutt Pools. There is a slight improvement in the river with a small run of fresh fish. A largo quantity of fish can be seen collecting at the mouths of all the streams. Tho Tauranga-Taupo is fishing especially well at tho outlet. One angler took 27 fish in five days, including two of lOJjlb. Another took 11 in five days, tho largest being Bj}lb. In the river below the bridge some catches of seven fish wero recorded on the evening of February 4. Two of the fish were over lOjlb. Nine rods were operating at Motutero and Jellicoe Points, but met with only moderate success. Since the earthquake, tile largest fish taken weighed 91b. The Hatepo was fishing fairly well before the earthquake, but it also is discoloured now and thickly pumiced. It will take a few days to be ifi a fishable state. The same applies to the Waitahanui River. Four-mile Bay has not been much fished in the past week. Several nice fish have been taken.

Launches have been particularly quiet since the earthquake. The catches included 14 fish for two rods and 15 for two rods. The largest fish weighed 9^lb. Dry fiy-fishing, one angler took his limit on one evening and averaged abut five fish an evening. Row-boats and anglers at the outlet have been doing fairly well for the past week, averaging about three fish a rod, mostly in very good condition and up to 81b in weight.
