ROYAL SQUADRON'S EVENT.

DIAMOND JUBILEE FUNCTION.

CELEBRATION AT KAWAU. . The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron celebrated its diamond jubilee on Saturday at Kawau. Almost every boat on the squadron's register made the trip to Mansion House Bay, while a large number of members and visitors proceeded to Kawau by steamer. The weather was ideal and a. most enjoyable time was spent by everybody. On Friday evening a race for keel yachts to Kawau started from King's Wharf and on Saturday further races for keel yachts and class M were held at Kawau. In the evening » dinner took place at Mansion House and tliifc was followed by a dance. The commodore, Mr. N. L. Wacky, was presented with a barometer as a token of esteem from the members to mark the occasion of the squadron's jubilee. Details of the racing are as follows: Win for . Thelma.

In the race from Auckland to Kawau no fewer than 17 bouts started, Ariki being first away, closely followed by Nga-loa, Prize, Thelma, Janet and the rest of the fleet, except lona and Heartsease, which wero a few minutes late. Ariki was smart with her spinnaker and on the run c ' ow ?} the harbour increased her lead. A full-sail breeze from the south-west prevailed throughout the night and a very interesting race was fought out between Ariki and Thelma, the latter finally passing Ariki and beating her across the finishing line by the rimrow margin of 5 seconds, i The-race started at 7.30 p.m. on Friday. All wero bunched except Waione which took a different course. About half a mile from the starting line Thelma luffed six boats arid put them in trouble with spinnakers set. The wind was now very light* and Waione picked up a north-east breeze arid got away from the others. Rounding the first mark the order was Ariki, Waione, 'Rawene, Thelma, Windward. Most of the boats wero now on the port jybe and on that leg the race was more or less a. drifting match. Windward took the lead at Boat Island. At Algie's Point the order wns Itawene, Prize, Ariki, Moana. Sheets were flattened for the beat to Mansion House and the following boats passed between Goat Island and tho main island:—Ariki, Prize, Janet, Rangi. Tlie rest of the fleet worked the South Harbour and ran into a calm except Rawene, which was first to complete the first round of. the course. Owing to lack of wind it was decided to declare the race on tho first round and halve the handicaps. . . FOUR GENERAL HANDICAPS. Four general handicaps for yachts and a rrico for motor-boats were held by .the Akaltina Yacht Club on Saturday nfternoon. The keel yachts competed for the Commemoration Cup. classes H, L and N for the White Cup, classes T. X and Y for the Club Cup, and tho motor-boats for the Ailsa Craig Cup. All events started and finished off the clubhouse, from which a large number of members and visitors viewed the racing. Afternoon tea was dispensed by tho ladies' committee and ill the evening a dance was held. The wind was light and variable until 4.45 p.m.. when a steady breeze came .from tlio south, enabling all the boats to finish. The officials in charge of the racing were. --Starter, Mr. H. Hill; judge, Mr. C. Chapman; timekeepers, Messrs. i.. Mclvnignt, G. E. Laycoek; recorder. Mr. W. A. ure. Details of tho racing are as follows:

The race for keel yachts brought out ■Eulalie, Speedwell and Iris. The wind was very light when the last flag fell and only Eulalie got away on time. Speedwell was 4m and Iris 5m 40s late in crossing the line. The easterly breeze gave the boats a beat out to the channel mark and. after standing across the harbour. Speedwell went into the lead and was never headed. Iris replaced Eulalie in the channel. . The race started nt 2.30 p.m. J lie finishiUa. times were:—Speedwell (2m). 4h 51m 50s; Iris (18m). 5h 8m 575; Eulalie (10m). stt 21m. , The result on corrected times was:— Speedwell, 1; Iris, 2; Eul&lie, 3. SUCCESS OF MOWAI. Twelve boats started in the general handicap for classes H. L and N. Why rsot got the best of the start, .crossing the line three lengths ahead of tlio rest of tlio fleet. Starlight was next away and was closely followed by Celox, Marie. .Ngaro. Doreen, lluia, Omatere and Mowai. The following were late:—Waiapu. 4m; Wairere. 5m 20s; Lovelight, 24m. Marie did well in tlio light wind and was soon in the lead. She was still at the head of the fleet at Ilead, but was passed by both Omatere and Starlight in Rnngitoto Channel. Hounding the Duder spit bnoy the order of the leading boats was:—"Omatere, Starlight. Marie. Sheets wero eased for the run back to the Bastion, and when the mark was reached the wind went round to the south, but before doing so it almost died away to a calm. Omatere continued to lead Starlight and Mario occupied third position until shortly before the finish, when Mowai. sailing splendidly in the light southerly, passed Mario and added another win to her credit. The race started at 2.40 p.m. Tlio finishing times were:—'Omatere (2m). 4h fiCm 255; Starlight (scr). 4h 57m 455; Mowai (13m), 5h 4m 10s: Mario (sm), oh 4m 20s; Celox (4m). Maneno soon increased her lead and was never headed. On completion of the first round the times wero:—Manene, 3h 39m 7s; Ranui. 3h 41m 10s; Bungaree, 3h 42m 18s; Waitpa. 4h sin 40s. The same order was kept in the final round until toward the finish, when Bungaree passed Ranui. The result on corrected times was:— Sybila, 1; Lois, 2: Vent, 3. The race for motor-boats brought out Kenya, Ramona. Nyria and Oclavia S. Tho boats crossed tho line in the order named. Ramona was soon in the lead, but unfortunately rounded the Rough Rock buoy instead o'f the White Light buoy, which put her out of the contest. The race started at 3.10 p.m. Tho finishing times wore:—Kenya (6m). 3h 47m 23h; Nyria (111 m), 3h 49m 20s; Oclavia S. (16m), 3h Rim. Tho result on corrected times was:— Octavia S„ 1; Nyria, 2; Kenya, 3. PANMURE SAILING CLUB. The Pnnmuro Sailing Club' held a race for yachts on the Tnmuki River on Saturday afternoon. The finishing times were:— Wo ilia, 4h llim 4s:" Caprice, 4h 19m 375; 'l'iii, 4h 19m 375; Ben Machee, 4h 20m 7s; Phyllis H. 4h 22m 7s. MANUKAU CLUB'S RACES.

CHAMPION CUP DAY. The Manukau Yacht and Motor-boat Club held i(s annual regatta and championship races on the Manukau on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal for yachting and there was a large attendnce of members and friends at the clubhouse. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies committeo and a full programme was rendered by the Onehunga Brass Band. Aoma won the open yacht championship of the Manukau, Drone accounted for the 18ft. championship, Sea Gnome for the 14ft. championship, while Miss Manukau had an easy win in the speed-boat race. Masters It. and D. McLeod won the championship race for class Z. Details are as follows:

Open Championship.—Aoma led all the way, the finishing times being:—Aoma, 4h 43m 34s j Drone, 4h 48m 2s; Daphne, 4h 52m 50s. Result.—Aoma, 1: Drone, 2; Daphne, 3. 14Ft. Championship—Sea Gnome led Nyria on the first round, with Janet third. The finishing times were:—Sea Gnome, 4h 28m 265; Nyria, 4h 40m 475; Janet, 4h 4.1 m 295; Miinu, 4h 47m 445; Rahiri, 4h 48m 12s. Result.—Sea Gnome, 1. , 18Ft Championship.—The finishing times were:—Drone, 4h 48m 2s; Daphne, 4h 52m 5Cs.

Result.—Drone, 1. _ Z Class.—First race: Tua Tea (R. and D. McLeod). 1; Comet (Leighlon and Pickering). 2. Final race: Tua Tea (R. Grant and B. Rawlinson), 1; Comet (It. and D. McLeod). 2. McLeod Bros, win the championRace (owners' handicap).— Finishing times:—Norma, 3h 30m 325, 1; Kaiapoi, 3h 31m 17s, 2*. Ngaroma and Miss Manukau tied for third place. In this ra c® the boats started at a time which would enable them to finish as near to 3.30 p.m. as possible, the winner being the boat to finish nearest to this time. Norma was only 32b over her time. Speed-boat Championship.—Only Miss Manukau and Shooting Star started Miss Manukau finished at 4h 18m 15s, nnd Shooting Star tailed to complete the course. Result.—Miss Manukau. 1. General Handicap.—The finishing times wereßetty, 4h 35m 15s; Almira 4h 43m 15s; Patricia, 4h 57m 15s: Wild 2m 435. . . _ -ri no Result.—Patricia, 1; Almira, 2; Betty, 3.
