DROWNED IN SURF.
FATE OF CRIPPLED MAN. FALL FROM FISHING LAUNCH. RESCUE EFFORTS IN VAIN. [BY TELTGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE PUKE, Friday. A drowning accident in which Mr. Ned Corbete, aged 22, of Maketu, lost his life, occurred at Maketu this afternoon. In company with Mr. R. Walters Mr. Corbett was returning from the fishing grounds at Motiti Island in his launch Arawa. The craft was crossing the bar at Maketu when a rope slipped over the end of the launcb and became caught in the exhaust pipe. Leaving the wheel to Mr. Walters, Mr. Corbett went to investigate, but while attempting to free the rope a wave caught the launch and ho overbalanced, being thrown into the surf. Mr. Corbett, who was a cripple with a wooden leg, was unablo to swim. Mr. Walters dived fully clothed to his rescue, but was unable to find the body, which has not yet been recovered.
