NORTH ISLAND TENDERS SAVING IN SUBSIDIES. Tho amount of the mail service subsidies payable for tho North Island during the present year will bo £4670 less than in 1930, the respective figures being £77,810 and £82,480, according to a statement issued by tho Postmaster-General, the lion. J. B. Donald, yesterday. Tho Minister said the decreaso was largely due to keen competition between tonderers and the elTective work of postal ofiicors in arranging mail services. In a number of cases tenderers submitted cut prices for groups of services. Many of the new. contracts provided for exten sions of routes, increased frequencies and other improvements. Tho saving obtained had not been made by any reductions in mail facilities.
