CONTESTS IN COUNTRY.

HURUNUI APANUI SHIELD. TAURANGA AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. Rugby contests were played in the various country centres on Saturday afternoon. The following accounts of matches were telegraphed by correspondents of the Herald:— Waiuku.—A challenge match for the Massey (. ii|), between Waiuku Union's senior representatives and the Manukau stnior representatives. was won by Waiuku. by 11 points jo ;i. Waiuku thus retained the cup. I*llo Waiuku forwards were too pood for the visiting pack and repeatedly put Waiuku on attack. Lloyd opened the score for the home team in the first half with a try, which I'cid converted. Stanford added another try before half-time. McNaughton scored a third try for Waiuku in tho second half. Just before the close of play Stephens secured a try for Manukau. Mr. Freeman, of Pollok, refcreed. Hamilton.—ln the final of the junior championship played at Htigby Park Old Boys A defeated Technical Old Boys by points to 3, The final of the third grade championship was won by Technical Old Boys, who beat Old Bo'ys by G points to 5. Junior grade: Old Boys A, *6, v. Technical Old Boys, 3. Third grade championship: Technical Old Boys A, 6. v. Old Boys, 5.

Tauranga.—Beautiful weather prevailed for the Rugby match this afternoon for the Te Hurunui Apanui Memorial Shield, when Rangitaiki (challengers) met Tauranga (holders). Tho game was fast and spectacular from start to finish. The challenforwards were better than the defenders' vanguard and wero responsible for tine work, which, however, was more than equalised by the clever play of the home rearguard. The outstanding feature was the play of Tassell. who scored four tries. Toward the end of tho first quarter Sutherland kicked a penalty goal for Rangitaiki and gave the visitors the lead. Karly in the second quarter Turner made an excellent opening and sent tlie ball to Tassell. who outpaced several opponents and scored brilliantly. The kick failed. A little later the Tauranga captain, Farmer, cut through and transferred to Tassell, who demonstrated his superior speed and scored again. Tho kick missed, and Tauranga led at half-time by G points to Soon after the third quarter opened Sutherland kicked a penalty goal and equalised the scores. Farmer cut in again cleverly and sent out to Tassell, who covered 50yds and outran several opponents to register his third try. The kick failed. Play was fast and willing in the final quarter, and, although the Rangitaiki vanguard played valiantly, it could not penetrate the defence. Just on time lies secured in the visitors' territory and kicked over the heads of the opposing cordon to the home wing-threequarter. Tassell. who gathered the ball in while running at top speed and scored his fourth try. The kick failed and the game ended:—Tauranga, 12: Rangitaiki, 6. Mr. Cliffe, of Te Puke, was referee. The win made Tauranga's third successive victory in defence of the shield. The Apanui team has the right to play the holders and may visit Tauranga before the close of the reason. A curtain-raiser between Athletics juniors and a junior team chosen from the other clubs was won by Athletics by II points to 6. The Tauranga High School Rughy team defeated Wailii High School by 0 points to 3. Rotorua—ln a Rugby match nt Arawa Park to-day Rotorua defeated Thames by It points to 9, after a fast and open game. Waiternnta juniors defeated Kahukuru by 1) points to 8. Opotlki —Two Rugby matches were played in Opotiki this afternoon in fine weather, the senior game being for the Kerridge Cup, between Country and 0.M.P.. and the junior ramo for the Mcintosh Shield between O.M.P. and Ruatoki. In the senior game play was fairly even right through, no score resulting in the first quarter, but in the second quarter Country livened up and Goldsmith ran over. Hawkins converting with a good kick. Play in the third quarter was still fairly even, each side scoring three points. Xewth retting over for Country and Temple kicking a penalty goal for O.M.P. In the last quarter both teams did their level best, hut there was no further score, the game finishing: Country. S; 0.M.P.. 3. Country is tiie holder of the cup for the season. Mr. W. Burrett was referee. In the junior game O.M.P. won the toss and played with the wind behind it. Ruatoki soon had the holders on their line defending. O.M.P. being compelled to force. A good run by Johnson took play to Ruatoki's line. Shortly afterwards Ruatoki was penalised and Mokomoko opened the score for O.M.P. with a cood goal After the chance over O.M.P. pressed hard and Withers scored a good try. but. the kick missed. Mokomoko was nearly over after running half the length of the field, but Ruatoki saved by forcing. Ruatoki then broke away and opened it 3 account with an unconverted t'j." In the third quarter O.M.P. went further ahead. Withers scoring a try. the kick failing. Ruatoki then gathered in three points with a penalty kick. Good play was shown by both sides, and O.M.P. wis enabled to get another three points. Beta scoring a try. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score:—O.M.P.. 12: Ruatoki, 6. Mr. W. Wilkinson was referee. Paeroa.—The Pukekohe representatives defeated Paeroa at Paeroa by -1 points to 9. The game was interesting, but, the Pukekohe team was too strong and it<* backs domineered tho game. Paeroa juniors defeated Parnell juniors by M poinls to S in au evenly contested game. Te Aroha—ln the junior representative match between Te Aroha and Hauraki Plains the former team was too superior for the visitors and scored 28 points to R. Tries for the winners were ohtained by Burgess, Ro.ve (2), Grant (2), Gibhs (2). Burgess kicked a penalty goal and Mackie and Jackson converted a to - each. Tries for Hauraki Plains were scored by Carr and Mac Duff Mr. A. 11. Smith referred tho game.

Cambridge.--Hughy competitions were continued here to-day in fine weather. Results:—Third crude championship final: High School, 21. United. 6. Junior grade: Hautapu. Kaipaki. 3: Leamington, 11. Matangi. 3. Ilouso match: Grocers, S. Mechanics, 3. Thames—ln a Rughy game to-day the Eden fourth grade toani defeated tire Thames third grade team by 1<• points to 3. Thames juniors defeated North Shore by 1G points to 0.

Dargaville—At Dargarillo to-day. Rawcno High School beat. Dargaville High School in a game for the McCarthy Cup by 0 poinls to 3. It, was a good, even contest, the scores just about indicating tho run of play on the day. For liawene, Chesterman scored a try and M. Fell kicked a penalty goal, and for Dargavillo Clotworthy scored a try. This was the third time the two teams had met this season. Kawene has won two out of tho three games. In a match for the Harding Cup, a junior challenge game. Southern and Dargaville (holder?) drew, —all. The C'ostello Shield same for seniors resulted in a win for Kuawai, which beat the holders, Tangowahine, by 1- points to 3.
