The Hamilton Rugby representatives retained the Peace Cup against the sixth challenge this season, when they defeated Mataniata by M points to 9 in a thrilling contest at Rugby Park yesterday. The weather was excellent and there was a fair attendance. Tho game was played at a fast pace throughout. Hamilton owed its victory principally to the capable ht«"ks, all of whom played a uniformly good game. Welch and Dens were outstanding. Tho rover Cassidy. was frequently prominent. Tho Mataniata rearguard was seldom seen in action and any promising movement invariably broke down owing to poor combination. Tho packs wero evenly matched in the loose, but Hamilton could do no more than hold its cwn in the scrums. Knsor, Fell, Sym? and Fraser, for Mataniata. and McCormick, Bayly and Hooper, lor Hamilton, were iho pick. The gam 9 commenced with hard play between the opposing forwards. From a scrum in midfield the ball travelled out along the Hamilton backs to Griffiths, who passed in to Fitzgerald, the latter player sending Cassidy over to score. Going fail.'d to convert. Going's sound defence saved Hamilton several times in the face of strong forward atticka. Going shortly afterwards missed a .-hot at a penalty goal from a dithcuit angl.:. Cassidy carried '.he ball through at his too and St. George secured in front of the goal, but be unsuccessfully attempted a pot at goal when he had two unopposed men in support. The visitors did not field anywhere near their best fifteen, several representative players being absent in Dunedin. but the team which did oppose the home side was a versatile one, and its superiority was fairlv clear cut in most departments. In the first half, when they were obliged to face a strong sun. the visitors were not seen at their best, and their attack was somewhat disorganised when Lilburne. as the result of an injury to his shoulder, was obliged to drop back to fullback, Roberts going up to centre and'lnnes to second liveeighths. The home forwards cave a good display in the loose, but in the tight weight was much against them, and Canterbury held a marked advantage in tho scrums with an abundance of the bal: The backs, who were fast and handled well, were able to exploit numerous moves, many of which would have ended successfully had the forwards not participated at the finish, lime and again the backs, when hemmed in. sent long transfers to the waiting forwards, onlv to see their good work undone by faulty handling. In the second half the visitors had matters much their own way. At one stage the score stood at It—l 3. but that was nearest the home side got.
