EDUCATION CONTROL.
THE TECHNICAL COLLEGES. =„ , , . . V ../"N 1 FINDINGS OF COMMITTEE. SUPPORT AND OPPOSITION. Varied opinions on the effect the Education Committee's report would have on ■ technical colleges were expressed at the meeting of the Seddon Memorial Technical Collge Roard yesterday. «, " I can interpret it only as' meaning that our school, as we know it, will bo completely blotted out," said the chairman, Mr. H. S. W. King. " The even- . ing classes will remain, naturally, but , children after leaving primary schools will proceed to one of the 'intermediate' . schools. The department is going to use the building and apparatus for totally , different purposes from those for which . its supporters have, prepared it." The principal, Mr. G. J. Park, said , that on the contrary he felt that under. ■ the new system the board would have far ' more independence. It would he linked , with the university, and*would have some representation on the university council. "In my opinion the report states the de- , ficiencies in our system.of education clearly and 1 feel that the board may safeJy sup- - port a large part of the* recommendations made," Mr. Park said. "There is not, the slightest doubt that attention must bo given to our more advanced works; it is ; from this that wc gain the respect of tho community, and with the excellent staff the board now has," the future in this re- ■ spect can be faced with every confidence." Mr. Park expressed the hope that the board would be able to support the pro- - posals of the committee, as he considered their adoption would inaugurate a new era for technical education in the city and bring it into line with what was'done in i other countries.
Further discussion of the committee's report was deferred to the next meeting of the board.
