NORMAN CASTLE FOUND.
LORD BLEDISLOE'S ESTATE. EXCAVATION AT LYDNEY. «. LONDON. August A. A very interesting discovery has been made at Lydney, in the deer park_ of Lord Bledisioe, Governor-General of New Zealand, on the borders of the Forest of Dean. P « »- Excavation by the Society o Antiquaries on a small steep-sided hill regaled a hitherto unknown Norman castle, consisting of a small rectangular keep measuring internally 30ft, by 23ft., with walls 13ft. thick at the base. There is also an inner court surrounded by a curtain wall and an outer court defended by a partly natural escarpment and partly by an earthen bank and a ditch. The kitchen of the castle is entirely paved with Roman bricks brought from a former adjacent Roman settlement. The newly discovered castle dates from the twelfth century, and is not mentioned in any historical document. , It is believed to have been built by the owner of the local iron forges to protect his workings in th& iron-bearing Forest of Dean,
