AT DUDLEY HOUSE.
PRE-WAR ATMOSPHERE
There was a distinctly pre-war atmosphere at the Hon Lady Ward s Derby ball at Dudley House, writes a Londoner.
Almost every feminine head carried its tiara. Some surprising-looking calves wero revealed in consequence of the male guests wearing knee-breeches. Masses of roses were banked up on each side of the ballroom. Jars of caviare and baskets of strawberries covered the supper tables. Even the music was Ambrosial. There were euoueh duchesses to havo satisfied Alice in Wonderland. One of these, the Duchess of Norfolk, sat on the right of the Queen, whose blue dress glittered with diamonds. Notable guests, such as I/ord Londonderry, were taken up to H*r Majesty one by one. She smiled as Prince George danced bv, first with Lady Milbanke and later with Mrs. Dudley Coats.
And tho prooi' of the success of the party was that the Queen did not leave until nearly midnight.
