WOMEN RESCUE OLD MAN.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHUKCH, Monday. Fire destroyed a little wooden cottage

in Aberdeen Street early this morning. The owner and occupior, Mr. D. Manning, who is 98, nearly lost his life. Ho was rescued in time by two women.

Mr. Manning stated afterwards that ho did not know who they were and was t.OO upset to thank them. He went to bed early last evening and shortly before 7 a.m. was awakened by a crackling noise.

[BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. A modern bungalow at Okato, owned and occupied by Mr. A. E. Hay, was destroyed bv fire on Saturday evening. The fire was discovered shortly after .eight, o'clock, but nothing could bo done in the absence of a water supply. Mr. and Mrs. Hay had been iu New Plymouth. On arriving at Okato they found that the house had been burned to the ground. It is not known how tho lire started. The house was insured with tho Phoenix Company for £BOO and the furniture with the South British Company for £2OO.
